Site aims

Since 2004, the aim of this web site has been to provide a central information point for anyone living in, working in, visiting, or with a personal or academic interest in Cheddar, and increase the general profile of Cheddar village on the internet and in social media. There are so many aspects to this unique locality it’s easy for those of us who live here to forget the different reasons why people might find themselves either visiting in person or just looking for information on the web. The cheddarvillage site goes beyond straightforward promotion of our tourist attractions and local news links, to create awareness of the many other cultural, historical, geographical, and sporting reasons that draw people to Cheddar, as well as improving awareness of the village’s facilities amongst our residents and businesses.

This is achieved through:

  • Independence of religious organisations, businesses and business groups, charities, clubs and local authorities
  • Supporting and linking to local community groups, clubs and charities
  • Supporting and linking to local sports clubs and sporting / outdoor events
  • Supporting and linking to local (BS27-based) businesses with free listings and web site links and providing facilities for paid-for enhanced advertising
  • Supporting the Parish Council and other local authorities, through sharing relevant community information
  • Maintaining a calendar of local events
  • Sharing community news stories and blogs, and highlighting issues, both local and national, that may interest or affect local residents and visitors
  • Providing links out to other web resources that local people will find useful
  • Providing a place for people to air their views on local topics of discussion
  • Encouraging visitors to connect with the site via social networks, particularly Twitter, and this site’s Twitter feed endeavours to stick to the following guidelines:
    • Tweeting of content provided direct to this site for community blogs or promoting local events
    • Retweeting of content of direct relevance to Cheddar residents, of general interest to countryside or tourism communities, and on matters relating to everyday life in the West Country
    • Retweeting of relevant, important local news web site output
    • Avoidance of link-baited tweets - the tweet must tell the story without the reader needing to click any attached link
    • Avoidance of re-tweeting heavy spam, religious, gossipy or scaremongering content, or any material of a general unsavoury nature
    • Limiting tweets of marketing material, competitions and offers, to occasional messages only from site sponsors
