Shop local

This web site strongly supports local shopping, and trade between local businesses. We are fortunate to have some good shops in Cheddar that offer a distinct character and something different from national chain stores.

By shopping locally it makes the village sustainable, supports local family businesses, and you are also assured of a local retail contact point for additional purchases or troubleshooting.

It also keeps money circulating within the village rather than draining away to shops in Weston, Bristol or Wells, and enables Cheddar businesses to employ more staff. So if you can find what you need in a local shop or a locally-owned internet store, save yourself some travel time, bus fares or petrol, and shop in Cheddar.

Riverside Inn Business Networking Group

Meets every fortnight for a business breakfast in Cheddar and occasional lunchtime meetings. A friendly, no-pressure environment where you can enjoy good food, introduce yourself to other local small business owners and raise money for charity at the same time. Visit the web site for more details.

Somerset Farmers Markets

These run locally, see Somerset Farmers Markets for more details.

Local Cheddar produce

Food and drink products bearing the Cheddar name which are made in the village or surrounding area:

Cheddar Cheese - made by many local farms, but specifically in Cheddar by the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company where you can watch the cheese being made.

Cheddar Ales - A microbrewery producing quality real ales available locally in pubs and also in bottles to drink at home.

Cheddar Strawberries - once carried away via the Strawberry Line railway but now by motorists passing by the strawberry farms along the Cheddar to Wells road.

Cheddar Chocolate - producers of chocolate confectionery which can be personalised for any occasion.

Cheddar Spring Water - extracted from within the Mendip cave network.

Local veg and fruit box delivery

Riverford Farm deliver fruit and veg boxes to this area, plus other produce, every Friday. Visit their web site to find out more and place an order.

Also a number of local producers have combined to provide the localfooddirect.co.uk web site delivering a wide range of locally produced groceries weekly around Somerset.

For more information about local food production visit www.somersetfood.org , bigbarn.co.uk (the link is a localised search for Cheddar), and Incredible Edible Somerset.

HOW TO GET LISTED

If you are a BS27-based* business, you can have a listing like those in these sections free of charge if you send over your details using the submission form. This service is intended for bona-fide retail or service businesses with postal addresses in the BS27 area, not for internet affiliate, personal “myspace/facebook”, reseller or multi-level/network marketing type setups. Business category groups may change over time. To increase your visibility, and to support the continued operation of the site, please also consider a paid-for display advert or page sponsorship - click here for more details. If you run a business in Cheddar please seek out the Cheddar Chamber of Commerce (contact Huw Davies, landlord of the Riverside Inn) to stay informed of local trade news and events.

*BS27 is the Cheddar postcode but a listing can also be made for businesses that service the Cheddar area, from neighbouring postcodes BS25 (Winscombe), BS26 (Axbridge), BS28 (Wedmore), BA5 (Wells), and BS40 (the Mendip area south of A368, Blagdon to West Harptree). These entries would appear after the BS27 businesses. All listings are placed at the discretion of the webmaster.
