ADVERTISING ON THIS SITE
If your business is BS27-based*, you can have a free "lineage" entry in the A to Z pages, simply send over a few lines of descriptive text, contact email, address and local telephone number, plus a link to your web site if you have one, and it will be added to the site free of charge. You can use the submission form for this. Check the business A-Z or accommodation listings to see what other people have written, if you need inspiration.
To give you some idea of the number of visitors "editorial opinion" or political angle to the site, and revenue from advertising simply pays for the development of web site features, web hosting and administrative costs - see the site summary in the margin for more in the way the site came into being and how it's run. Many small community web sites run on a shoestring budget, and are only occasionally updated, perhaps by a parishioner or council member in a volunteer role. This one has someone looking after it on a daily basis, checking and adding content, and is perhaps more of a living web portal and online magazine than a parish website.

The cost is £25 per year + VAT including setting up or changing an annual static ad for the sidebar. If you are an advertiser in the printed Village and Gorge leaflet produced by the Cheddar Village Diary, for the duration of the leaflet you can re-use the same ad on here free of charge, or £15+VAT if you need it linked to a web site or adjusted in some other way for the web.
There is also the option for £45+VAT to sponsor a whole page with a top-of-page static banner. Animated ads can be designed for an additional fee. You can track its effectiveness in your web site statistics service by monitoring hits received

the subject matter of Cheddar Village. You will be able to
create an advert for your business which will often appear
in the footer or margin of these pages and also on many other
web sites that show Google adverts. Your ad will then also

and Google Desktop Search, as well as on the sites of Google's
partner companies (including AOL, Lycos, and Ask Jeeves).

*BS27 is the Cheddar postcode but a listing can also be made for businesses that service the Cheddar area, from neighbouring postcodes BS25 (Winscombe), BS26 (Axbridge), BS28 (Wedmore), BA5 (Wells), and BS40 (the Mendip area south of A368, Blagdon to West Harptree). Site summary Cheddar has a number of web sites associated with the councils, individual tourist attractions and businesses in the area but this site pulls together all the various strands of local interest both for visitors and locals. Attempts at such a site had been made in the past but being run on a completely voluntary basis they had not been properly maintained when the site owners' interests or daily priorities changed. This left our internationally-known village with a web site that was of little use to anybody, full of outdated information and broken links. So this site was set up by a local web professional in 2004 with a view to creating and maintaining the best possible one-stop site for Cheddar Village and Gorge as a whole, given available resources. Over time, local interest has driven the addition of many new features and widgets which have been located and added, from third party providers offering additional content such as B&B reviews and flatshare listings. Make no bones about it, it takes a lot of money and effort to keep the site running. Without any central funding, the operation is paid for through advertising and affiliate links, which cover the web hosting, domain registration, a significant bandwidth usage, software licences, hardware maintenance and various office overheads. The webmaster also works with several local voluntary groups such as those supporting the Library and local traders, to keep up to date with developments in the village. The underlying philosophy for the site is to support local residents and businesses in the BS27 area or just outside, providing information, promoting events and listing businesses in this area free of charge. For those who want more prominent positioning on the site, banner or margin ad spaces are available to rent. The site also earns commission from relevant national companies who provide links or widgets on the site, e.g. train or coach ticket booking sites.
